Esta semana a Nina foi para a pré-escola pela primeira vez. É uma mudança muito grande para todos, sobretudo para ela, e queria que tivesse algo muito especial para a acompanhar, mesmo quando eu não estiver presente. Decidi fazer a mochila dela, mesmo correndo o risco de não conseguir competir com todas as mochilas de desenhos animados da televisão que circulam por todo o lado (quem tem filhos com 3 anos sabe o que quero dizer). Combinei com ela que lhe faria uma mochila muito especial, e que os cartoons favoritos iriam estar presentes noutras coisas, como a garrafa de água e a lancheira. Envolvi-a no desenho da mochila, para lhe despertar o interesse. Juntas decidimos que teria um ouriço, que ambas gostamos muito, e ela decidiu que estaria "à sombra de uma árvore". Escolheu a cor rosa (claro), e eu tratei do resto, em segredo. Idealizei uma espécie de cenário de história infantil, passada num bosque cheio de flores e animais simpáticos, algo que lhe transmitisse alguma paz e fantasia. Decidi brincar com as cores e usar um tom diferente para a parte lateral e outro para o fecho. Para o forro escolhi um tecido bem fofinho, cheio de corações ("olha Nina, são os nossos corações, de toda a nossa família, que está sempre contigo"). Bordei o nome e, por fim, acrescentei um pequeno pormenor, um passarinho de madeira para a ajudar a puxar o fecho. Ela adorou, e o meu coração de mãe ficou um pouco mais leve, sabendo que vai correr tudo bem...

This week Nina went to preschool for the first time. It's a huge change for everybody, specially for her, and I wanted her to have something very special to go along with her, even when I'm not present. I decided to make her the backpack, even at the risk of not being able to compete with all those backpacks with tv cartoons out there (everyone who has 3 years old kids know what I mean). We both agreed that I would make her a very special backpack, and that she would have her favourite cartoons on other stuff, like her water bottle and lunch box. I got her involved on the design process, in order to catch her interest. Together, we decided it would have an hedgehog, that we both love, and she said she wanted it to be "under a tree's shadow". She chose pink (of course), and I took care of the rest, secretly. I imagined some kind of child's story scenario, in a forest full of flowers and nice animals, something that would give her some peace and fantasy. I played with colours and used a different shade for the side panel, and another for the zipper. For the lining, I used a cute fabric full of hearts ("look Nina, those are our hearts, from our family, who is always with you"). I hand stitched her name and then added this tiny detail, a wooden bird to help her pull the zipper. She loved it, and this mother's heart got a little lighter, knowing everything will be ok...
