15 years of Mundo Flo!

work in progress

Mundo Flo is celebrating 15 years old, and it's been such a journey! Today I'm going to tell you a little about this project's story:

My love for textile arts comes from my childhood, when I learned to work with yarn with my grandmother (I used to love spreading all her yarn balls, and start small knitting and crochet projects under her supervision), and sewing with my nanny (who was a seamstress and had a whole universe of needles, pins, fabrics and threads to explore). I'm not sure how I learned to embroider, but I think it was a mix of these women's teachings with my mother's lessons, some school classes and my own curiosity. I remember leafing through my mom's book about crafts at embroidering and crochet sections, and how looking at the pictures made me feel so calm, almost like if I could preview the effect that slow making has on us. But then adolescence came, and all this felt asleep. I kept expressing my creativity through music, painting and writing, but handmaking just went into hibernation.

Until one day, when it suddenly woke up from its long sleep! I'm not sure when it happened, but I know it was somewhere in Autumn 2004, when I was 25. I lived in Coimbra, and was in the middle of my master ship in Ecology, studying red deer's habitat, making lots of field work, and eager for some procrastination...The trigger was a tv show I happened to watch by chance, where 3 makers were interviewed (in a time when knitting or crafts weren't seen from a contemporary point of view, they were seen as "granny" stuff, but things were about to change), and watching my friend's sister (who was younger than me) knit a scarf. Suddenly I felt this urge to work with my materials again, and I just grabbed what I found. At my student's home I had some fabrics I liked, and there was this old curtain my mother gave me, with a very retro pattern (I loved things from the 60's and 70's), and so bag nº 1 was born. Almost at the same time, I created the brand, because I always took it very seriously, beyond all the gifts I started to make for family and friends.

...

Mundo Flo began as a brand of all things handmade, without much focus, as I used to make everything I felt like or anything that crossed my mind as possible to be made. Bags, cases, brooches, notebooks, photo albums, slippers, hats,... Later, I specialized in bags, which was my main product for a long time, getting life through thematic collections.
Later on 2015, motherhood brought me the will and need to open space for children's world, and also the desire to have a wider range of products, that honored my sources of inspiration, and my own lifestyle: nature, plants and trees, the sea, life in the city, books, magic of childhood. A shop of goods that helped us get our day-to-day organized, but also enjoy the beauty of little things and slow down.

Slowly I got more and more customers and, because I've always been so seriously and committed about this, I think I've built a consistent brand, with the growing goal of making it a very important part of my life. It's been 15 years of continuous work: 3 as a student, playing around with creativity; 8 as a full time employee, working 1 hour before leaving for my day job and on weekends; 4 as a full time maker but also as a new mom, with a whole new balance to conquer.

I've watched many changes on the market, and also on the internet world. I started when blogs weren't very popular in Portugal, with my own blog "O tempo e o deserto" (which I had created in the Spring of 2004, as a way of sharing my photography and inspirations), and also with Flickr, where I met so many creative people, some of them I keep following these days, somewhere else; I was in some magazines (those days, the main source of inspiration), and was part of digital platforms like Etsy and Pinterest from their beginning; I've watched the birth of "urban crafts" movement and also the end of so many projects that came with it like mushrooms; I was in some fairs and markets, and also stores around the country; then came Facebook and Instagram, and a whole new era of online shops and brands, bloggers and influencers...
Around here things have changed as well, as naturally as a person changes through 15 years, but on a steady and slow pace. What started as a side project took the shape of a very real dream, that ended up turning a lifestyle. Today Mundo Flo brings with it all those years of perseverance and resilience (maybe willfulness and stubbornness), and I never doubted I wanted to make things with my own hands, in small scale, all one-of-a-kind and customized, differentiated by quality and special details.

...

Along the way, I have learnt so much about life, myself and society. I have faced many obstacles, my own peacefull way, and I have grown with them. Today, I see everything that goes less well as a new (or old) lesson to learn.
Rowing against the current and against many deep-rooted beliefs about the work world, our value in it and how we should build our life, has brought me the fear of scarcity and the unknown (mine and of those around me), many moments of loneliness, and the feeling of misunderstanding and misfit, specially after loosing the "safety net" of a traditional day job, but all of them have helped me define my values and deal with my anxiety. Thanks to them, I'm a more peaceful person today, more intuitive, more aware of my abilities and limitations, and much more grateful. I have embraced my introversion and accepted that my way of doing things might not be the same as everybody else's nor the one seen as "the only path to success". I have accepted my own rhythm and slowness as a strength rather than a weakness. I have learnt that it is really true that life starts flowing better when we finally stop denying ourselves and start following what gives us vitality. And, the best of all, I have learnt that I'm not alone! There are other people like me, out of the "matrix" :)
