Textile Cartographies Project

Quando disse que o mês de Junho foi rico em colaborações criativas não estava exagerar. Este é mais um bonito projecto em que tive o privilégio de colocar as minhas mãos. 

Tudo começou no Festival Literário Versátil, em Leiria, com um convite da Malharia para me juntar a bordar alguns quadrados de tecido que tinham sido estampados pelos reclusos do Estabelecimento Prisional de Leiria Jovens com a técnica da cianotipia. Estes trabalhos, conduzidos pela professora Filipa Rodrigues, integravam-se no projecto internacional Cartografias Têxteis, coordenado pela APECV e composto por trabalhos colaborativos a decorrer desde 2021, em vários locais do mundo, feitos por diversos grupos organizados em torno da criação artística e do activismo social e ambiental junto de comunidades vulneráveis, tendo as técnicas têxteis (como o bordado e a tecelagem) como fio condutor. 

Depois de uma tarde bem passada na Versátil a bordar alguns desses quadrados azuis, surgiu o convite para nos dirigirmos ao Estabelecimento Prisional e mostrar ao vivo o acto de bordar aos autores de cada quadrado. Foi assim que tivemos a oportunidade de partilhar um pouco deste saber ancestral com jovens reclusos, ensiná-los a bordar e, arriscaria a dizer, contagiá-los um pouco com o gosto por esta técnica!

O resultado desta intervenção seguiu depois para a Sicília, para integrar uma exposição no Aura Fest. Os trabalhos seguiram inacabados, tal como saíram do EP, revelando assim um pouco mais do que é a importância do processo em detrimento do resultado final. Posteriormente, irão ser criados mais quadrados azuis por outros reclusos, que serão intervencionados com bordado pela Malharia, e o projecto seguirá para o Chile.

When I said that the month of June was rich in creative collaborations I wasn't exaggerating. This is another beautiful project that I had the privilege of getting my hands on.

It all started at the Versátil literary festival, in Leiria, with an invitation from Malharia to join in embroidering some fabric squares that had been printed by prisoners at the Leiria Prison Establishment using the cyanotype technique. These works, led by Professor Filipa Rodrigues, were part of the international project Textile Cartographies, coordinated by APECV and composed of several collaborative works in progress since 2021 in various places around the world, carried out by different groups organized around artistic creation and social and environmental activism with vulnerable communities, using textile techniques (such as embroidery and weaving) as a common thread. 

After a well-spent afternoon at Versátil embroidering some of these blue squares, we were invited to go to the Prison Establishment and show the act of embroidery live to the authors of each square. We had the opportunity to share some of this ancestral knowledge with young inmates, teach them how to embroider and, I would dare to say, inspire them with a taste for this technique!

The result of this intervention went then to Sicily, to be part of an exhibition at the Aura Fest. The works went there unfinished, as they left the Prison Establishment, thus revealing a little more about the importance of the process rather than the final result. Soon, more blue squares will be created by other prisoners and embroidered by Malharia, and the project will move on to another exhibition in Chile.
