About February

"For me, a year without a true winter never allows me to fall in love with the gift of the first crocus or the first songs of the bird with as much admiration. The thing snow gives us is multifold, but it reminds us of what life is like when we have space to dream up something completely different. Gives us space to dream and connect with ourselves. It contrasts with the abundance of beauty that awaits in the soil beneath us, so we better appreciate it and value what it gives. Whether you have snow or not, how are you creating a clean landscape in yourself to dream?"

(Megan Gilger, in "The Gift of the Storm", Through The Seasons)

...
So this was February, which brought so much light, flowers and days that smelled like spring but went by too fast!

A beautiful dress that is 43 years old fell into my hands, full of tiny holes made by moths. It was the perfect excuse to fill it with a garden of flowers!

Each mending project teaches me something new, and this one came to take me out of my comfort zone. It was a woolen sweater full of moth holes and an ugly logo. I made a patch with a sparrow to cover the largest area and then I gave my first class on how to visible mend, to the sweater's owner. The wrist was repaired by my client (and later the other parts needing for care), and it made me very proud of her work!

A mesma inspiração vegetal, habitats diferentes, água e terra.

...

Some time ago I picked an old bag pattern to make these two shoulder bags. The same botanical inspiration, but different habitats, water and earth.

A series of custom requests for the same client ended up becoming a mini collection. "Be intentional" is a powerful reminder to bring along with us, being in the form of backpack, bookmark or bracelet!

This little pouch was an unusual challenge made by a friend of mine, as it had to be transparent in order to carry a school card. After much thought, I decided to use an acetate sheet. I don't usually make famous characters, but when she told me about Totoro, I couldn't resist, as I love all the universe of this film, as well as Studio Ghibli's. Once in a while it feels good to get out of the norm and try something new, just for fun!

Another challenge out of my usual work was this book cover, with a portrait of two malamute dogs, and an aurora borealis in the background, in a pink shade I rarely use, but whose result I liked a lot.

...

And because I hadn't shared here yet, some medicine necklace bags I made a while ago. The first two were inspired by previous works, and the latter is a different pattern, which I hope to be able to develop soon, which mimics a cushion cover, allowing us to store some aromatic plants inside.

Notes to self on January's end

Provavelmente, numa lenta despedida que sempre me desespera. Confia...

...

January is made of light that freezes but awakens. This year, it brought the bonus of a mild and sunny ending. There is no feeling like the hug of the winter sun. A few days ago, I noticed for the first time the "smell of sunshine" in the air, which I only sense when nature begins to wake up from its long torpor. It's a subtile sign, but I know it's a promise, because it repeats year after year.  I know that the cold, and probably the rain, will return. Probably in a slow farewell that always makes me despair. But, for now, I enjoy these fulfilling sunshine rays whenever I can. Outside, everything is still calm, reminding us that transitions and cycles are slow processes, coming and going, just like the waves of the sea. Exercise patience, as well as attention to the small signs, both outside and inside. Listen to your inner voice that makes itself heard better in this quietness. Give it time to express itself, in a time when everything is rushing by. Train focus too, so you don't get carried away by the whirlwind. Keep your inner light burning, like a guide, a presence that nourishes and strengthens. It's not time to blow it out yet. Trust...
